Most pottery made from potters’ clay is fired twice. The first time is what’s known as a bisque firing, which are at a high temperature to give them a hard durable form, it is then dipped or painted with glaze and put into a second firing, known as a glaze firing.
Bisque in ceramics refers to pottery that has undergone the first firing to bisque temperatures. You can identify bisque ware by flicking t with your finger it will have a ring to it rather than a dull noise like dry pottery does. Often the color has changed too. Bisque-fired pottery looks whiter than it did before going into the kiln. Some types of clay also go a slight pinkish color in the bisque firing rather than a grey color like dry pottery.
Objects are made by hand and can be decorated by various techniques.
Decoupage with non tears or serviettes.
Painted with Acrylic or Vintage paints. Acrylic is one of the best paints to use when painting ceramics. These paints are versatile and can be used on many surfaces, specifically for unglazed pottery. Acrylics are chemical-based paints, but most brands are also non toxic.
And then sealed with Hard as nails. The type of clear coat that you use can make a world of difference. Some clear coats will help seal the project, but can also have a fun appearance.
Spray paint, Watercolor paint, Paint Markers, Crayon, Oil Pastels, Colored Pencils. Puff Paint or even dipping the object into shaving cream, liquid watercolor and mosaic. These are also ways to decorate your product.
It is not recommended to use these products for food and oven unless glazed fired or sealed with food safe sealer, although Hard as nails are not a hazardous product.
